Forty young aspiring medics travelled from across the North West to experience the amazing, interactive, Operating Theatre Live show run by Amy and Scarlett
Beginning with an informative anatomy lecture, the students learnt about the brain, digestive and nervous system. Working in groups, the students then had hands-on experience dissecting a pig’s brain and heart, and having a detailed look at the looking at the thoracic organs.
Dr Geoff Chiuu from Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital, was available to help the students with their dissections and showed them how to work as part of a surgical team.
Dr Chiuu, is one of 100’s of employees and professionals who answered a request from the Careers and Enterprise Company’s ‘Give an Hour’ initiative.
“The main reason for giving my time, is that when I reflect on my own time at school, I was never exposed to good careers advice or opportunities like the Live Theatre. I came from a working-class family so I like to provide inspiration to young people to show that from whatever background they’ve come from, if I can do what I’ve done then so can they.
No one in my family had been to medical school before. I went to an average comprehensive school in working class town, not many of us went on to university. I’m even dyslexic! I just worked hard, and I was very lucky to have parents who encouraged me. I went on to do a Dental Degree, Medical Degree and a Masters from Oxford.”
